Stand for Reparations with The Zacchaeus Foundation

Dear Friends and Fellow Good Trouble Makers,

Today, I invite you to stand for reparations with The Zacchaeus Foundation

  • This year, with friends from Chicago, IL, Evanston, IL, and Washington, DC, we started The Zacchaeus Fellowship, a national network whose mission is to help people do local faith-based reparations.

  • Last month, the federal government attacked friends in Evanston, IL, who are doing local reparations (my letter to the editor of the newspaper is below and an NPR story is here).

  • Next week, on Saturday July 11th at 3pm at St. Paul's Church, we will view The Big Payback, a film about reparations featuring Robin Rue Simmons of Evanston, IL.

Today, I invite you to stand for reparations with The Zacchaeus Foundation by

  • being present at The Big Payback film viewing on Saturday July 11th at 3pm at St. Paul's Church

  • paying 1% of your income to The Zacchaeus Fund

  • promoting the work (inviting other white people and churches to be present and pay)

With hope for healing,

Lowell Taylor

Board Member, The Zacchaeus Foundation

My letter to the editor

The US president wants to use a $1.776B fund to repay people - some of whom attacked the US capital under confederate and Trump flags on Jan 6, 2021 - whom he says have been wronged by the government.

The people of Evanston, IL are using a $20M fund to repay Black people - all of whom suffered housing discrimination in Evanston from 1919 to 1969 or descend from people who did - whom they say have been wronged by the government.

The US president and the people of Evanston agree about reparations: when the government wrongs people, it ought to repay them.

The US president and the people of Evanston disagree about reparations in Evanston: the US president wants to stop them (the DOJ says they wrong white people); the people of Evanston want to continue them.

Ida B Wells said the best way to right wrongs is to shine the light of truth on them.

Who has been wronged by the government, and ought to be repaid? When we shine the light of truth, what do we see?

I’m with the people of Evanston.
